Dental tourism gone bad

We had a very sad situation today. A lovely  patient had come in to see if we could fix some dental implant work that had been done overseas. The front tooth implant had been carried out overseas and a year later it was loose and drifting.

X-rays revealed it wasn't even a normal dental implant and was possibly a mini implant and was actually a screw shaped post. The patient had been told this was a conventional dental implant.

The condition means that this is now a much bigger problem to fix than if the patient had received proper treatment initially. In this patient case they lost a tooth when overseas so they felt they had no other option at the time.

However this is not the first time we have seen this sort of work carried out overseas. Often the motivating factor is potential price advantages. The problem is that there is very little come back and when work is not carried out properly the costs to repair it can be much more expensive and sometimes not even possible.

Our advice would be to stick to treatment in the UK with clinicians carrying out these advanced procedures routinely. If you have a potential problem we can fix it often before failure occurs. Affordable payment plans can make paying for treatments easier.
